"An Avian flu strain that has claimed dozens of lives has been passed between people for the first time, experts fear.

The virus is thought to have been transmitted between a father, who frequented poultry markets, and his daughter who had not been exposed to live birds.

It raises the possibility that an outbreak which has seen 133 cases and 43 deaths in China since February could spread faster and wider.

The findings provide the strongest evidence yet of H7N9 being passed between humans but its ability to transmit itself is ‘limited and non-sustainable,’ according to research published by the British Medical Journal.

The father, 60, was nursed by his 32-year-old daughter after falling ill in eastern China earlier this year.

She developed symptoms six days after he was taken to hospital and died of multiple organ failure on April 24, ten days before he did.

It was likely that the virus could have passed between two people because previous strains had done the same, said Dr Peter Horby, of Oxford university’s research unit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The strains have been around for years but ‘have not progressed any further towards a pandemic virus’, he added."
