    Bird flu spreads further afield
Mar 16, 2004 (Travel Digest (NZ) - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Some 22 people have so far died of bird influenza in Asia. No government agencies have issued travel bans on the affected countries, which include Thailand and Vietnam. The US Centre for Disease Control advises travellers to be vigilant around poultry and in country areas. The Centre claims a new strain of bird flu that has emerged in the US "has largely subsided". No humans have been infected by the US strain. The Centre's Dr Julie Gerberding notes that there are no documented cases of the US strain being passed between people, although it would be possible.

You have to wonder how serious are goverment officials in relation to this bird flu. I suppose it all comes down to money and economy none of which they want to lose on. As always they seem to try to keep it low key as not to cause a panic until a few hundred more people die!
