I was carrying out one of my periodic searches last night. Bisantrene popped up in a study that was a computer-based scan for existing drugs that may have potential to bind with COVID-19.

For the study the SuperDrug2 database was scanned. This is a database for approved drugs (Bisantrene was previously approved in France). There are over 4,600 agents in the database. So out of a list of 4,600 agents, Bisantrene was identified in a top 15 list of approved drugs that may bind with COVID-19. It came in at number 13.

The study is looking at agents that may have potential to bind to COVID-19. Trials would need to confirm it’s efficacy for this purpose however that scan identifies it as a possible candidate among others.

Key is though that Bisantrene has been previously approved for use in humans so if trials did show that it was effective in some way for treatment of COVID-19 then it could potentially be progressed to approval relatively quickly.

Note - study is a pre-print and has not been peer-reviewed. Nevertheless interesting.
