I was watching the buy/sell queues pre-open today. The real bids were indicating a small gap up, but there were some carefully orchestrated bids with some sacrificial volume to step it down to below the close price. In the end, the strategy was clearly caught out and the fake bids retracted or countered by someone after a modest parcel of cheap shares at .86.
There are one of two motivations in algorithmic trading - to pump or deflate the price. TO me it looks like an attempt to deflate the price. The real question is why, and the obvious answer is to buy cheaper, which leads on to how would that look? I'd either CR or capitulation. I think capitulation's out because the fundamentals have never been better.
We will see soon if the CR caller's are on the money.
