Sunday 29 July 2012: Equine Nutrition Australia announces world first breakthrough in TB Science

In July this year, after 2 years of work, Australian biotechnology company Phosphagenics Limited reached an arrangement with Equine Nutrition Australia (ENA) to commercialize products utilizing Phosphagenics' technology. The arrangement will lead to the parties jointly conducting research aimed at registering two new supplements for Thoroughbred Breeding and Thoroughbred racehorses that could change the way supplements are administered worldwide.
? The first product will combine the essential trace mineral selenium with Phosphagenics' proprietary delivery technology, TPM®, with the aim of providing superior absorption of the mineral for horses.
? The second TPM® supplement is designed to boost the red blood cell count (Haemoglobin) in the racehorse, increasing the oxygen bearing capacity to enhance stamina during training. Oxygen supply is vital for muscles to function and to grow with training. The major limiting factor in supplying oxygen to the muscle is red blood cells. Increasing the number of red blood cells increases the oxygen supply to muscles and increases the potential VO2 max.

? In December 2011 trials were conducted in 18 work racehorses at a stable on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. The results of the "proof-of-concept" were outstanding.
? The formulation containing TPM® produced excellent increases of Red Blood Cells (Rbc) and Haemoglobin (Hb) after only 7 days of supplementation (up to 9%), and even higher levels after 14 days of supplementation (up to 13%). These trials had 3 control arms including the current Gold Standard Blood Building product, against which the formulation containing TPM® showed significant improvement.
? The potential for the TPM formulation to lead to a ground breaking global change in supplementation of racehorses seems clear. All formulations tested fall within the guidelines of daily oral supplementation and do not contravene any of the Rules of Racing.
? Late stage trials are about to commence in stables located on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and will involve up to 40 horses. These trials are designed to provide the required Good Clinical Practice (GCP) data for the application for registration of these supplements by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).
? Phosphagenics CEO, Dr Esra Ogru, said this latest agreement again demonstrated the versatility and efficacy of the company's platform technology. She said the collaboration with ENA represented a substantial market opportunity.
? Equine Nutrition Australia Managing Director, Mr Rob Neely, said supplementing feed with antioxidants, trace minerals, vitamins and essential amino acids had been shown to promote muscle and tissue repair and growth. He said selenium was regarded as playing a critical role in maintaining muscle integrity and cell membrane integrity, as well as supporting immune function. Improving red blood cell counts could result in greater stamina and delay lactic acid build up.
? Mr Neely said that they have already fielded expressions of interest that from 10 countries and pre licencing discussions are underway for global distribution in 2013. He went on to say that this technology in effect gives horses in a 1200 metre race a 156 metre head start, if one were to equate 13% increase in oxygen capacity to metres raced.
? The animal supplement market worldwide has a turnover in excess of $10 billion per annum.
