Bookies say goodbye and good riddance to Black Caviar

The only people happy to hear Wednesday’s announcement of Black Caviar’s retirement are bookmakers around the world.
The end to Black Caviar’s undefeated 25-start career has left bookmakers finally breathing a sigh of relief.

Sportingbet Australia CEO Michael Sullivan said no individual horse has cost the business more than Black Caviar.
"We’ve taken a total of $45 million worth of bets on Black Caviar across her 25 starts and our punters have won $8.5 million backing her,” Sullivan said. "No other horse has attracted as many six-figure and seven-figure bets as what she has.

"She’s been phenomenal for racing and she’s an absolute champion, but I won’t be shedding a tear over her retirement.”

Worldwide betting exchange Betfair matched more than $71 million of bets on Black Caviar during her illustrious career at a weighted-average price of $1.18.

Punters placed more than $2.2 million of bets on her in the run with her highest-ever odds being $3.40 during the run at her first start at Flemington as a two-year-old. She hit $3 when spotting Hay List a big start in the 2011 TJ Smith Stakes.

More than 26,000 individual Betfair punters placed a bet on Black Caviar and almost half of those were from outside Australia.

Her Diamond Jubilee Stakes win at Royal Ascot saw Black Caviar become the best-backed horse in Betfair’s history when 95.5 percent of the race’s $20.6 million was matched on her.
