I would prefer to see mini-shocks downwards.

Whilst many of us many be comformtable with a major shock. The majority of the people in this world are creatures of comfort and are seldomly exposed to abnormal and stressful situations...particularly when it comes destruction of their wealth. I guess presidents and PMs have been trying to ensure that the pain occurs over a longer period of time to reduce the shock level. If the major shock happens in a short space of time...the whole thing could unravel itself.
