hergerr - excellent post from you re. hindsight...you summed up my thoughts perfectly.
People who are ranting and complaining about Alcan need to realise that a year ago, the directors were PRAISED for trying to expand their company. And it wasn't just RIO doing it - Vale overpaid, Xstrata overpaid...nearly all the major miners (except BHP) overpaid for assets.
RIO is not alone in doing what it did. Sure it could have been a little more prudent, but the benefit of hindsight is a VERY BIG one.
