Earlier this month, in a historic handover, Gudang/Yadhaykenu Aboriginal Corporation took back tenure of 211ha of land at the tip of the Cape York, including the abandoned Pajinka resort.

Northern Peninsula Area Mayor Eddie Newman said potential Chinese investment in the resort raised concerns about the Gudang/Yadhaykenu Aboriginal Corporation’s ability to manage profits coming from offshore investments.

“That was always the concern, that no one gains out of this – maybe a few individuals – but it could just be a one-off payment and that’s it,” he said.

“The mainland and the most northern point (of Australia) – if they buy that, it will end up like a resort. They will bring their own mob in; the locals won’t gain out of this.

“The (traditional owners) probably will but which TOs – is it the whole traditional owner group or just the individuals?”

Traditional owner and Gudang/Yadhaykenu Aboriginal Corporation chairman Michael Solomon denied any negotiations with Chinese investors.

“There is a lot of Australian people out there who are willing to do a partnership with Gudang/Yadhaykenu,” he said. “Everything will be discussed by the chair and all the directors and the members and elders. We always go back to the people for approval.”
