SO now he beat her in the head with a cricket bat as well as shooting her? And his parents are blaming 'sportsman's reactions'? Pullease. IMHO it was one of three things.

1) 'Something' (or nothing)set off his anger management issues and she got in the way.
2) It was premeditated as the police claim.
3) He was whacked out on drugs?

(The third option is completely speculative but it would explain the event.)

I guess you could theoretically say he was half asleep and reacted by pulling the gun but after the first shot you would be WIDE awake, and that doesn't explain the bloodied cricket bat.
