A DFB laser is also necessary for separation of isotopes. The resonance frequencies of elements are very close - for example for separation of uranium isotopes the 235UF6 resonant frequency is 15.916 microns whilst for 238UF6 it's 15.931 microns (these are far infrared NOT visible light). As such a single frequency laser beam is essential - any "drift" will cause the unwanted isotope to also be excited.
