The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to make an announcement this week that will make the majority of new US car sales electric vehicles (EVs) by 2032, according to a New York Times scoop that dropped this weekend.

EPA administrator Michael S. Regan is expected to announce proposed limits on tailpipe emissions on Wednesday in Detroit. The Times' sources “spoke on condition of anonymity because the information had not been made public.”

It would be the federal government’s most aggressive climate regulation to-date and would propel the US to the front of the global effort to slash automobile tailpipe emissions, a major driver of climate change. The EU already enacted vehicle emissions standards that are expected to phase out the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035. Standards similar to the European model are also under works in Canada and Britain.

The new EPA requirements will ensure that EVs make up between 54-60% of all new cars sold in the US by 2030, with that figure rising to 64-67% of new car sales by 2032.

That's right - new top line estimate is 67% of all new cars sold in the US will be EVs within 9 years (by 2032). This is not pie in the sky, but a realistic projection based on new policy.

Only 5.8% of all vehicles sold last year in the US were electric, so this new rule is going to represent a “quantum leap,” as the Times puts it, for the country. "The new regulations would come on the heels of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which has helped stoke demand for electric vehicles by providing up to $7,500 in tax incentives for car buyers as well as billions in incentives for battery manufacturing and critical mineral processing and mining.

"This newly proposed EPA regulation will go through a public comment period and may be altered by the government before it’s finalized.
