Blocking supply was the end game - long before that the skids had been put under the ALP by various means some of course of their own making. But don't forget the role of the CIA and the UK intelligence agencies. They were all paranoid of 'socialist' labour. I suspect they helped discredit the ALP's economic credentials through their role in dodgy loan deals. US Pres.
