Yes, I've read about the call for write down. The argument was that the company's goal for (15%?) return on equity is likely to motivate risky behaviour because QBE equity (according to the analysts) are overstated by their goodwill value.
I can't imagine the management doing that though. RIO's boss got executed on the spot for doing that. Imagine the headline yesterday if that happened: QBE reported $5.8 billion loss; jobs shifted to Manila =)
