Cameroon Subjects Mining Industry to Transparency Initiative

    By Pius Lukong

Sept. 25 (Bloomberg) Cameroon's government said it will subject its mining industry to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, an accord that aims to limit corruption.

Mining companies in the west African nation will be integrated into the process ``progressively,'' Bagueka Assobo Alfred, head of the EITI Technical Secretariat in Cameroon's Finance Ministry, told reporters yesterday in the capital, Yaounde. He spoke after a two-day meeting of the steering committee of the EITI.

``The steering committee will henceforth ensure that the reconciliation reports on oil and other extractive resources be simplified and made accessible to the general public,'' Alfred said.

EITI was started in 2002 by former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair to increase transparency in oil, gas and mining revenue in developing countries. Cameroon subjected its oil industry to the initiative in 2005.
