Crews preparing to cap well while flow is stopped.

PAINCOURTVILLE An oil and gas blowout in Assumption Parish stopped on its own about 1:30 a.m. today and crews are preparing to cap the well from the surface while the flow is stopped, Louisiana State Police reported this morning.

The exploratory well northwest of Paincourtville bridged, or likely filled in with sand, said Trooper Bryan Zeringue, spokesman for State Police Troop C.

The Mantle Oil and Gas LLC well had been spewing oil, gas, brine, sand and other materials into the air since early on Aug. 11. The well is located in the middle of large and relatively isolated agricultural area west of Bayou Lafourche.
