I am agnostic about what they use to capture the CO2 from the reformer, it is where and how they sequester the carbon.
There is still 3.5T of co2 to every tonne of Hydrogen from other processes in the chain. e.g. mining, transport, electricity for reforming etc. (Hydrogen decarbonization pathways A life-cycle assessment January 2021 Hydrogen Council)
If they capture 95% co2 when it hits the reformer, then there is still 1 tonne of co2 for every tonne of hydrogen that doesn't get captured.
When they pump the co2 underground they extract oil. The oil is equivalent to 44 tonnes of co2 for coal or 22 tonnes for gas (Alberta plant).
The whole concept of decarbonising the energy chain is to minimise co2. Pumping co2 into an oil field to extract oil is in no way aligned with this and is worse than pumping the co2 into the environment directly.
Note from Air Products pretty diagram, they omit the whole life cycle analysis. HXG are using coal so it is double the co2 in their scenario.
And for anyone that says that the co2 from the oil doesn't count, I'd liken it to someone dumping toxins into a river, walking upstream and taking a sample and saying there are no toxins. It's all smoke and mirrors, and politicians pretending to do something to get votes.
Coinveniently when people mention air products, they don't ever mention their massive GREEN hydrogen plant in Saudi that will produce 250kt h a year. All green! https://ieefa.org/u-s-air-products-chemicals-announces-4gw-green-hydrogen-project-with-saudi-arabias-acwa-power/
