    Ceramic fuel cells GmbH

BlueGEN fuel cells - high-efficiency and low-CO2 power and heat generation

In the category of "Research and development" is the winner of this year's award of the German gas industry for innovation and climate protection the ceramic fuel cells GmbH with its BlueGen fuel cell.

Ceramic fuel cells (CFC) is a German Australian developer and manufacturer of technologies for solid oxide fuel cells, and in this area of one of the world's leading companies. With the fuel cell technology developed by CFC, gas is highly efficient and reliable, energy-saving and low emissions electricity and heat converted to. The small micro-cogeneration produced on this basis of CFC (power heat coupling systems), which are especially suitable for households and small businesses, achieve an electrical efficiency of up to 60% for the combined production of electricity and heat. Associated with the generation of mechanical energy and converting it with a generator to electric energy the energy of a fuel is converted to in contrast to conventional power generation (fossil fuel burning) in the fuel cell by electro chemical processes directly into electrical and thermal energy.

To achieve a higher voltage, multiple fuel cells for a stack be wired in series (also known as "Stack"). This combination of fuel cell technology and power heat coupling allows to significantly increase the efficiency of the primary energy. Heat and electricity can be provided when compared to conventional generation with up to one-third less primary energy. A further advantage of this technology is the good part load performance. So, the "micro-power plants controlled by the Internet" as a flexible generator can contribute to the stability of the network. Winner is the environment, because significantly less climate-damaging CO2 emissions.

The company has opened one of the world's first series production for fuel cell stacks into Heinsberg near Aachen in 2009. Meanwhile, CFC employs approximately 50 employees at the location where complete Micro-CHP units are manufactured in addition to the fuel cell stack.

The jury awards the prize to ceramic fuel cells for this pioneering development in the context of the award of the German gas industry for innovation and climate protection 2012 in the category of "Research and development". The prize is endowed with € 20,000.
