I discussed this issue with ASIC and the ASX a year or so ago and was advised that there is no statutory time period dealing with directors buying and that each company sets their own blockout period as part of their articles of association.
This of course only applies to info as you've rightfully explained.
ASIC is only interested if they can smell any insider trading.
