Because he has done all the hard work, and built all the relationships. If he leaves, these all die, with no guarantees that they could be rebuilt, as once a company goes through a major C-level staff change the new management have to start building these back from scratch. No-one likes to see management change in the tough times, shows the company is well and truly cooked (which it isn't, unless he leaves)

Maybe if you can just let him get through this critical juncture then he can leave, I am sure he is as sick of you as we are.
