growth vs value is a finance industry term - not general language

the phrase/distinction is generally used about industrial equities - not miners

mining stocks dont generally fit either categorisation - because the time to value buy established mining stocks is usually when their p/e is at its highest

thats because mining stock earnings are primarily driven by commodity price - so earnings are lowest (pe highest) when commodity prices are lowest

a pre-cashflow stock of any type would never be a 'value' stock - because it has no earnings,so it would never be regarded as 'cheap' or 'value'

a value stock is one with actual earnings that is cheap on a relative valuation basis - ie p/e, p/s and other ratios

growth stocks are those like the tech stocks that get very high valuation on p/e or other basis because market assumes they grow earnings very quickly or like say amazon was - where they may not even be profitable for years as they grow their audience before trying to profit from it

value stocks are the ones warren buffet is famous for saying he invests in - the ones that produce the goods everyone buys every day at coles or woolies like toothpaste or coke/mineral water/ etc

its not quite true thats his style - buffet made a lot of his money from speculations, takeovers and debt finance deals.

but its what hes famous for saying retail investors should focus on.
