Ona into gold

“We have been buying and selling gold during the crisis years.’’

RECLUSIVE Panguna king Francis Ona says his Me’ekamui movement has been buying and selling gold for most of the crisis years.
He told the Post-Courier in an exclusive interview last week, he had been buying gold from the people in the villages around the mountaintops and selling it overseas.
Mr Ona said his gold buying and selling formed a big part of the revenue for his republic of Me’ekamui movement.
He said he had enough reserves that could raise more money locally and overseas to provide all the necessary services for the “sovereign state” of Bougainville.
He said the villagers panned gold in rivers of Central Bougainville and sold it to the Me’ekamui government.
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan this month issued a statement saying that the UN only recognised the Government of PNG as the “sole legitimate source of government authority in the country”.
Mr Ona said: “Our independence and services are ready to be delivered. I have all funding ready and available to fund all these.
“We have been selling and buying gold (and we are still doing that) to find money to strengthen our work and our economy so that our people can reap the benefits and be happy.
“We are in implementation stages right now in terms of some of these which will assist families in education and medical fees through this government’s services.
“Also, we have done asset identification of mineral, agriculture, farming, commercially sustainable crops, seasonal crops and the fishing industry to help the economy through foreign and local investments as well as government funding.
“We have to be careful in how we approach most things, especially with our engagement in gold activities and to assist in the development, we have to look at things nationally.
If they think that autonomy for us are the areas behind the Morgan check point, that is an understatement. We have ensured that our investment partners with funds externally are in place as well as our reserves here to implement our plans.”
