Construction of Cotonou-Niamey railway line to be launched on April 7 (Xinhuanet 03/22/14)
Train NIAMEY, March (Xinhua) -- The construction work for the Cotonou-Niamey railway line, a section of the Cotonou-Niamey- Ouagadougou-Abidjan-Lome railway line, will be officially launched on April 7 in Niamey, an official source in the Nigerien capital said on Friday.
The source said a similar exercise is scheduled to take place on May 8, 2014 on Benin's side to speed up the railway construction work.
A French firm, Bollore, which is the strategic partner for the project, committed itself to mobilize necessary funds to ensure the project is completed within four years.
This section to be constructed between Cotonou to Parakou (Benin) and between Parakou and Niamey by an international construction company will cost about 1 billion euros over a distance of 1,050 km.
Up to 40 percent of the construction cost will come from strategic partners, 10 percent each from Niger and Benin, 20 percent from Nigerien private sector partners and 20 percent from Beninese private sector partners.
The completion of the railway line will have a considerable positive economic impact for Niger and countries in the region, as it will facilitate export of agricultural products, livestock and mineral resources.
