I assume you were talking of your youth? You recall, without remembering the book, "a group of children being in a cave type thingy on the coast - and something about smugglers", suggests to me and my recollection of a similar stage of reading the Enid Blyton series, Famous Five and Secret Seven.
Anyway, enjoying people's different tastes and reading experiences on this thread, and thanks to LRTF for reminding me of Hughes' Fatal Shore - particularly interesting comments on the link you provide.
Currently enjoying an entertaining read in "Horrie the war dog", by Roland Perry. It provides a different view of the characters we sent to war, as well as those we encountered over there.
