Is technology to blame: my grandson, who is 14 now, used to read & read &read and we would buy him more & more books. Then they started teaching him computers about Year 4 and it's been a downhill spiral since then. When he stays with us some weekends, he has his laptop & phone going all the time, including these conference internet calls with his friends (or whatever they're called).

Have teachers lost the art, or did they ever have it, of finding ways to implant the joy of reading in kids. Of course they could only ever reach a small proportion I imagine. Do they still waste time (just my opinion) on baffling children with Shakespeare?

It's probably a combination of those and other things I don't know about. And of course we are all different.
