to give a practical example, removed from the world of stocks & shares: they're expecting a comet to crash into good old planet earth, right? when, that's the big question. it could be around 2035, give or take a few years. but it doesn't have to be (it's only a 1:500 chance). in which case, you might have to calculate another couple of hundred years ahead.

what is of importance now, is not whether it does or doesn't happen. but if anyone is still around at the end of the century (not a cert by any means, what with terrorism, birdflu etc) they will have a good point of reference to work from.
