Yes CTL is very water intensive, not good for the projects in South East Queensland, currently experiencing a severe drought.

70% of the capex and a large proportion of the operating expenditure of traditional GTL plants is involved in the above ground gasification plant. By combining UCG with GTL you not only reduce the overall GHG emissions but also the cost. IF LNC can succeed in proving this combination can work, and by that I mean getting the right H2 to CO ratio, then CTL using UCG will play a significant role in Australia’s and maybe the world’s short term energy needs, IMO. I guess we will find out in the next couple of months if this is possible.

IMO, what Australia and indeed the world needs is a price for Carbon. Once this established, the market will drive the technologies forward.
