XSTRATA could go back on the acquisition trail, expanding its interests in Australia, if it backs a takeover by major shareholder Glencore to create a $US82 billion ($74bn) resources giant.
The Swiss group, Australia's largest coal producer, confirmed on Thursday its 34 per cent shareholder, Glencore, had approached the diversified miner about a potential "all-share merger of equals".
