simple, they borrow the share from funds/bank to short the market then buy back at the lower price, return back the share to the lender and keep the difference. Because they have to return the share back the same day or within 24 hours to avoid very high interests, that is why usually the SP will be bought back at the close. I doubt they dare to shot the market at lower price again as CAN is one of the very hot stock.
