The Saturn V rocket control systems had "random" disturbances injected into the stage control loops, enabling the current system state to be computed more accurately and thus the stages controlled more precisely.

Similarly, a market participant may buy or sell shares to gain information on supply and demand, at the loss of some surplus, and then with this information gain more surplus than was lost. Note however that the aims are not the same - stable tracking rocket versus gaining surplus.

I am confident that this market behaviour has occurred since the first markets were established.
