Patent claims need to be worded very carefully - one can claim the earth and all that lies under it, the sky, the moon, Sol, the Milky Way, and the Universe, but often the gist is in some combination which is claimed to work well (e.g. BTX 1503).
It can be thoroughly venal - for example the Lucas Battery Case.
Patent lawyers become richer; inventors such as Armstrong suffer.
