In regards to these bot trades- I have placed orders through Etrade only to see 1 or 2 shares purchased or see my order take 4 partial trades to complete or watch my order slowly get nibbled and filled. Flash Boys by Michael Lewis is a pretty interesting, (depressing?) read. Does it ultimately slow or halt a long term share price increase based on a fundamental stock play- possibly slows, but chains can't hold forever. To me those who would most get burnt by bots would be technical day traders unless they're using HFT algos or are close in location to execution servers. Would be interested to know what kind of computer setup our daytrading friends(?) have.
