Its because of DMA (direct market access) traders (either buying or selling) can program in how much they want to buy or sell over the course of a day and the 'bot' does it for them in small parcels, usually to track the VWAP... saves dumping a huge order on the market. It is notmally associated with large players because they need DMA and it is too much hassle for ordinary investors.
