Previous owner/creator did not take an operating margin. They simply made the one cent call app and incurred debt to do so, most likely with the goal of being bought out

New owners have taken that tech, made multiple, targeted apps and opened it to much larger market with clear marketing strategy.

Also, the industry is 3 trillion dollars, not 3bln. Therefore they only need a small market share to be profitable... But obviously this is still a long way away.
