Mr Oakeshott says the proposal set out in the Henry tax review makes sense, and suggests the debate over the tax in the dying days of the Rudd government and early days of the Gillard government was an example of the failings of the previous Parliament.

He says there was never any legislation for MPs to look at and if the discussion of the mining tax had been opened up, "we might have got a better result for Australia".

Mr Windsor says he does support a resources rent tax; Mr Bandt says the Greens supported the original proposal and were "pretty disappointed with the backdown";

but Mr Katter says the mining tax would have done untold damage to the economy of Australia.
