Just remember that there are a lot of people in the market with different views, timeframes and expectations.
There are usually stocks that will do much better over a couple of days if you can get on them early enough (just looks at EPS - no I didn't get on board). A lot of money in CVI will be temporarily borrowed - a bunch of stock held on a T+1 or T+3 basis. I would guess that this could make up 20-30% of the free float on a stock like CVI.
Also for many people, the stocks are just numbers on a screen. They move up and down, and the traders will base their action on that - without necessarily doing any research into what the company does or what their prospects are. They are not buying into a company and their capabilities including management; they are buying into a squiggle on a chart.
