ME’EKAMUI “king’’ Francis Ona, the man who orchestrated the Bougainville crisis, yesterday stepped out into the open for the first time in 16 years.
In his first day in public, Mr Ona reiterated that Bougainville was independent, that there was no need for autonomy and elections and that Australia was not welcome in Bougainville.
Dressed like a politician, a clean shaven Mr Ona in a navy blue long sleeved shirt, black pants, leather shoes and wearing a traditional shell money necklace addressed hundreds of people in the heart of Arawa town.
He started his public rally in his home area Panguna, leading hundreds of his troops out of the “No-Go Zone” in a convoy of vehicles from Guava village.
Mr Ona rode into town on a new dark blue Toyota Landcruiser with a loudhailer in hand and his two sons at the back of the open backed vehicle.
From Section Four in Arawa, where the Me’ekamui office is located, he began his “royal address’’ before proceeding to the Bougainville office of the United Nations Observer Mission where he addressed the UN.
UNOMB head Tor Stenbock signed a letter addressed to him and later shook hands for the first time with Mr Ona.
In that address, Mr Ona declared Bougainville was independent.
Hundreds of placards adorned the area where Mr Ona spoke from.
Among the placards, some read: “We want Australian Federal Police out now and tomorrow’’ and “Momis, Kabui and Tanis the devil men.”
Mr Ona repeatedly demanded that the AFP officers (serving in PNG under the title, Australian Assisting Police or AAP) and the PNG Government get out of Bougainville. He urged the AFP members to return to Australia which he said was running an illegal government in Bougainville.
“Australia and PNG governments have not at any time had any ownership of these islands and that any trustee administration is cancelled forthwith and immediately. They both are now declared defunct and fired,” Mr Ona said.
