Bougainville will look at mining to support autonomy
MINING will definitely be looked at by the government of Bougainville to sustain its autonomous government but this does not necessarily mean re-opening the Panguna Copper mine as yet, according to a reliable source on Bougainville.
A mining moratorium still stands on Bougainville and it really depends on the present government on Bougainville to look at the issue, however, this is an area which remains untouched until genuine peace is fully restored on the island.
“Mining will be looked at as one option to sustain the economy. The autonomous government will definitely need money to operate. However, this does not necessarily mean re-opening the Panguna mine but to look at other options of mining in other areas of Bougainville,” the source said.
The common feeling among Bougainvilleans is for an amicable peaceful solution of the crisis be achieved first and issues of the Panguna mine which is the heart of the eruption of the crisis, causing untold sufferings and of lives be left aside until Bougainville has totally regained peace and normality, and moreover, established its autonomous government which will then be in a position to make important decision on such issues.
Elections will shortly take place.
