From the ASX short list yesterday (includes both ASX and Chi-X), 1.01% of all NEN shares on the register were shorted. Sure, it was the biggest percentage of all companies, but it is still only 5.5m shares:

Yesterday, 59.5m shares traded, so 10% of shares traded were short. The rest, presumably were long- 90% of shares traded.
What is so interesting here is the volume vs the major share holdings. About 40% of all shares were traded a few days ago, then 10% yesterday, and it is looking like that again today. There's very few large holders. In fact, before this calamity, you could hold 3m shares and still be in the Top 20. So, the volume seems to come from a gazillion day traders in NEN.
