You say the recent incident where passengers had to use escape slides is bad. What do you say then about QANTAS' main competitor ( Singapore Airlines ) who have killed at least 600 passengers and crew in three crashes in the last few years.

The escape slide incident might be great copy for the media but perhaps the captain remembered a similar situation in Saudia Arabia where a SAUDIA plane stopped on the runway with a small fire and the captain did not order an evacuation nor did he depressurise the aircraft. So when the fire got a little bit bigger and passengers began to panic because of the smoke build up in the cabin, the emergency exits couldn't be opened (due to the cabin pressurisation) and everyone on board died.

QANTAS has a safety record which is second to none and in 84 years of flying they have not killed or seriously injured a single passenger. Perhaps the use of the escape slide in Sydney might have been a bit over the top but I don't think it warrants seeling QANTAS short.
