In one way his life turned out to be similar to a terrorist's; he has a failed autobiography. This is freely taken from commentary on the Charly Hebdo massacres and the type of young men they found to be the executors of those crimes: like many Muslim youths in the West he lived in the misery of the 'burbs' - or with his Dad in grim circumstances. He had an obviously difficult childhood without any intervention by the authorities (I am not trying to excuse him here) - due to lack of brains/parental supervision etc. he failed at an education, there is probably also the humiliation at never having become a successful footy player, sportsman, rapper, but maybe a pizza delivery guy; he writes on Facebook that he runs a small business (!) - he goes through life with an exaggerated self-image. Yesterday, either on drugs, or things going more pear-shaped than usual, he acted out his frustrations during a long period, beginning with the fight with his brother, the threatening behaviour towards his neighbour; he takes his car by force; he escalates by taking his girlfriend hostage (here the police could and should have acted) he continues to act out a violent, macho heroism - as he sees it - 'mowing down people in the street' (so he had said to his girlfriend) - a split-second state of supremacy and triumph in his mind; long-term sadness and irreparable damage to so many people.

Agreed hard labor would be the way to go for such offenders , my grandfather was given 2 years hard labor breaking rocks at Mt Eden for extortion as an 18 year old back in 1880 it was the best thing for him , turned his life around got married had 10 children broke in a dairy farm carried on doing hard work till his death in 1925
