VICTORIA'S historic goldfield at Walhalla has yielded a drilling result thought to be unparalleled in Australia over the past century but even explorer Goldstar Resources is being cautious not to overplay its latest hit.

The company yesterday reported one drill hole intersected 5604g a tonne of gold but over a relatively short 0.35m.

To put this in context, gold explorers can get excited about 5g/tonne although over a much greater distance than 0.35m.

Goldstar managing director Andrew King said this was typical of nuggetty-style gold -- where grades vary greatly -- and was not representative of the average grade of the reefs at Walhalla.

"The chances of repeating it are low," he added. "It's the luck of the draw."
