Environment Minister Sussan Ley says mixed messaging over energy policy proved fatal for the Labor Party in the Upper Hunter byelection.

The ALP recorded a nine per cent swing against it at the polls with leader Jodi McKay admitting the National Party’s victory was a “terrible result”.

Ms Ley said the weekend’s result demonstrates a balanced approach to energy and the environment resonates with voters.

“People want to know what you stand for, they just didn’t know what Labor stood for,” she told Sky News.

“On the one hand, we had their environmental movement saying close down all fossil fuels and step straight into an unrealistic world of renewables.

“On the other hand you had the Member for Hunter – and it’s in his patch – talking about the need for jobs.

“What people appreciate from us, I believe, is the balance; you can’t switch everything off overnight.

“You’ve got to do it in a way that’s affordable as well as being clean and reliable when it comes to energy.”
