"As I understand it, three generating units of Callide's four were synchronised to the power system, and they dropped off. I don't know exactly which three they were, but I take it it was producing about 1,200 megawatts," he said.

"Which at the time it dropped off shortly after 2.15pm, the demand in Queensland was 5,500 megawatts, which was not terribly high for Queensland, it can go up to 8,000 or more, it goes down to a minimum of around 4 to 5,000.

"So it dropped off that generating unit, which caused other generating units to drop off, and as a consequence about 2,000 megawatts of load was lost in short order."

Professor Mountain said at the time of the incident, Queensland would have been exporting about 800 megawatts down to NSW as per normal.
