Former Chief Scientist Alan Finkel, now a special advisor for the federal government on emissions reduction, underscored the importance of carbon capture and storage to be able to meet net zero emissions goals.

Dr Finkel told the APPEA conference oil and gas companies are in the best position to develop the CCS industry, which would be vital to reduce emissions in hard-to-abate heavy industries.

“The role of CCS, I should point out, is being promoted by the IEA, the United Nations, the Biden administration: We won’t get to net zero without CCS and the companies that can do it and can do it really well are the oil and gas companies of Australia and around the world,” Dr Finkel said.
