The last vaccine wasn't required, because the virus burnt itself out, however they are light spreads ahead now, because they have utilised the research from the last viruses (SARS) (MERS) and have adapted it.
Let's face reality, COVID will never be eliminated, globally it's now being navigated, it requires enough people to get it, so some herd resistance is present in the community but infection rates can't skyrocket to aggressively that the health system grinds to a halt.
Vaccines and treatments need to be implemented during this process.
