I thought it would be good to get a wikipedia page up for Brainchip. I've made a start (see below), but I am looking for contributions from you guys to help lift the quality of it. I've submitted it for approval - which can take up to two months - so I can edit it further in the meantime ahead of the review (and hopefully approval). Please be mindful that any claims will need to be substantiated with references (lol - sorry pig - that counts you out from making any contributions).

Brainchip (Brainchip Holdings LTD) is a company specialising in neuromorphic hardware for edge sensor applications[1]. It was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in new south wales Australia with branches worldwide. Its technology is based on a hardware form of a spiking neural network (SNN) and its flagship product is named Akida (ακίδα) - meaning 'spike' in Greek[2].

    Akida Neural Processor System-on-chip (NSoC)

The Akida NSoC represents a revolutionary new breed of Neural Processing computing devices for Edge AI devices and systems. Each Akida NSoC has effectively 1.2 million neurons and 10 billion synapses, representing orders of magnitude better efficiency than other neural processing devices on the market. Comparisons to leading DNN accelerator devices show an order of magnitude better images/second/watt running industry standard benchmarks with MobileNet, MobileNet-SSD and Key Word Spotting, while maintaining excellent accuracy.[1].

The Akida NSoC is designed for use as a stand-alone embedded accelerator or as a co-processor. It includes interfaces for ADAS sensors, audio sensors, and other IoT sensors. It also has high-speed data interfaces such as PCI-Express, USB, 12C and 13S. An on-chip MPU is used to control the configuration of the Akida Neuron Fabric as well as off-chip communication of metadata. The Akida NSoC represents a scalable solution utilizing a built in serial chip to chip connectivity to allow up to 64 devices to be arrayed for a single solution[3].

    History

    • July 2018, BrainChip introduced the freely available Akida Development Environment[4] which fully simulates the Akida SoC and provides performance information for accuracy, speed, latency and power for customer evaluation and implementation[5][6].
    • September 2018, the Company introduced the Akida Architecture after filing a comprehensive provisional patent covering the device inventions and methods[5].
    • May 2019, the Company announced the availability of licensing the Akida Neural Processing Core (NPC) intellectual property (IP)[7] for integration by semiconductor and system companies. This allows companies to create solutions which benefit from lower power, higher speed and similar accuracy of existing complex CNNs that use a host processor for training and inference with a secondary device for computational acceleration[5].
    • June 2019, the Company filed a further provisional patent covering additional inventions and methods[5].
    • June 2019, the Company introduced a CNN-to-SNN converter that companies can use to convert and reduce power from existing CNN networks to event-based SNN networks[5].
    • June 2019, the Company announced the signing of a definitive agreement with Socionext America Inc (SNA) for product development and manufacturing of its Akida Neuromorphic System-on-Chip (NSoC)[5][8][9].
