The discussions at high levels of government would hopefully be about disadvantage and the way disadvantage is going to change and challenge less able members of society.

At the moment or perhaps it should be said in the past it has been very easy to identify the disadvantaged in society and compensate disadvantage with social welfare or charity, while hanging on to the fiction that everyone is born equal and if given equal opportunity and access to education all will be well.

It does not take the intellect of Elon Musk to understand that the future is throwing this idea out the window.

A.I. will very quickly remove opportunity for all but the intellectually able and it is difficult to have any confidence that those that govern us have the integrity necessary to find a solution. The idea of universal income seems a possible solution but does not even rate a mention in the corridors of power in this country and of course requires an efficient fair system of collecting taxation.

Australia once led the world in the area of fair wages, aged pensions, medical treatment, social security but in 1990 the political party which had driven fairness since federation announced that unless individuals provided for themselves through compulsory superannuation governments would not be able to support them in the future. Superannuation as a solution only works if the majority of the population can engage in real employment for 30 to 40 years of working life.

This idea is now locked in by both sides of politics in this country against the backdrop of a completely new paradigm which is AI not to mention globalisation and the consequent failure to agree and establish fair and efficient taxation systems so that mega corporations which exist across borders contribute equally across the communities they inhabit.

Hopefully you are right that AI not only will be able to create the problem but at the same time find the solution.
