Octopus to extend reach in cross-border platform

Octopus Cards, a unit of Hong Kong's MTR Corp, has signed preliminary pacts involving up to US$293 million in mainland automatic fare collection (AFC) projects. Octopus, which has been rumoured to be eyeing a listing, signed the memorandums of understanding at the China Hi-Tech Fair in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen on Satu*day, reported Sing Tao Daily, quoting the company's chief executive Eric Tai Yung-muk. The MTR unit signed a deal with a Shenzhen computer company on the provision of an AFC system for underground railways across China - a project which could be worth up to 2.4 billion yuan (about HK$2.25 billion), the newspaper reported indicating it had also signed an agreement with the Changsha municipal government in southern China's Hunan province. It would see Octopus providing an AFC system for the city's buses and retailers. The project is expected to be worth up to US$3 million. Octopus officials were not immediately available to comment on the report. In both of these projects, Octopus would design the software, build the system and provide consultancy services on operation and management, the newspaper reported. Mr Tai was reported as saying he would not rule out the possibility of Octopus directly investing in the projects. The newspaper quoted Mr Tai as saying the two deals had yet to be confirmed and the contractual values remained to be finalised.
