Can I just check a general consensus on this thread? Let's say a refugee/asylum-seeker whatever you want to call them, on Nauru, was seriously in a lot of trouble medically. Not a "oh god, I feel terrible, I am just about to die, please I need to get to Australia hurry hurry", I mean actually in dire straits medically (I dunno, maybe he was cut in two from the hips down) and local expertise was utterly unable to deal with it. Let's completely purify the baseline by also assuming that the patient in question has been given the thumbs up as a decent, law-abiding citizen of some wartorn country and is kind-of a fair dinkum refugee-type. Let's say that off the record even Peter Dutton said he looked squeaky clean. Maybe he's only 7, who knows.
Is the general consensus of posters to this thread that really, even in this most unlikely of circumstances where literally everything was pointing in favour of bringing the would-be patient to Australia for what would be for a couple of our surgeons a walk in the park and have him back on the boat/plane to Nauru within a week for recovery, that it would be a case of "sorry mate, you come looking to get into Australia and fall mortally ill and the local help can't fix you, it's kind of just bad luck. Next time think about things like 'what if I get sick' before you get on a boat to come to our country"?
It would help to know the proportion who are completely unwavering and would literally watch and allow a tenant of one of the two locations to die a slow and painful death to avoid any potential projection of weakness of our border protections. Consider in the example that it's not as a result of self-harm or the like, completely above board and squeaky clean case of something that the local medical resources aren't able to handle.
I'm not asking about the inevitable flood of allegedly sick people it would cause in the future (or not cause, I guess depending on your stripe), but just curious if the above baseline is where everyone's argument on here would eventually come to rest.
